We Know What Ads Your Competitors Are Running. Here's Why That Matters.

Most locksmith businesses write their Google Ads based on gut feel — what sounds right, what the last agency suggested, or whatever Google's 'smart' suggestions auto-filled. We do something different. Before we write a single headline for a new client, we pull apart every competitor in their area. Their messaging, their offers, their ad extensions, their weaknesses. And it changes everything.

We Know What Ads Your Competitors Are Running. Here's Why That Matters.

Why guessing at ad copy is expensive

When you write a Google Ad without knowing what your searcher is already seeing, you're gambling. You might lead with '24/7 Emergency Service' — but so does everyone else in your market. You might skip ad extensions because you didn't know your biggest competitor is running review stars, callouts, and a call extension that makes their ad twice the size of yours. You might offer a 'free quote' when every other locksmith is already doing that, making it invisible.

Competitive intelligence removes the guesswork. When you can see the exact ads that show up alongside yours, you can find the gaps — the things nobody is saying, the trust signals nobody is using, the offers that would actually stand out.

What a competitor ad landscape actually looks like

Here's a real example of what we see when we pull the competitive landscape for a locksmith in Auckland. Three ads show up for 'emergency locksmith Auckland'. Look at the difference between them:

Breaking down what separates winners from wasters

The first ad does almost everything right. It has a specific, measurable claim — 20-minute response, guaranteed. It uses a call extension so the phone number is right there. It has review stars, which increase click-through rate by 15-20% on average. And the callouts reinforce trust: no call-out fee, police vetted. That ad is engineered to get the click.

The second and third ads are what we see in about 70% of locksmith accounts. Generic headlines that could apply to any trade in any city. No extensions. No specifics. No reason to choose them over the first result. They're paying the same cost-per-click as the top ad, but converting at a fraction of the rate.

If two locksmiths pay $6 per click but one converts at 8% and the other at 3%, the first is paying $75 per lead. The second is paying $200 per lead. Same keyword, same market, same spend — different ad quality. That gap compounds every single month.

The six things we look for in every competitor audit

When we run competitive intelligence for a new locksmith client, we're not just glancing at ad copy. We're systematically mapping the competitive landscape across six dimensions:

  • Messaging angle — What's the lead offer? Response time, price, guarantee, trust signal? Is everyone saying the same thing, or is there a gap?
  • Ad extensions — Who's using callouts, sitelinks, call extensions, structured snippets, review stars? Extensions increase ad real estate by 20-30% and directly impact CTR.
  • Impression share — How often does each competitor actually show up? Some run all day, some only during business hours, some are barely visible. This tells you how aggressively they're bidding.
  • Landing page quality — Where does the click go? Generic homepage, or a purpose-built page that matches the search intent? This is where most locksmiths lose the conversion.
  • Geographic coverage — Are they targeting too wide? Too narrow? Is there a suburb or town where nobody's bidding aggressively?
  • Offer differentiation — Is anyone making a claim that nobody else is? No call-out fee, price match, arrival guarantee, specific warranty? These are the wedges that win.

Finding the gaps your competitors leave open

The most valuable output from competitive research isn't knowing what your competitors do. It's knowing what they don't do. In almost every locksmith market we analyse, there are consistent gaps. Nobody is running a genuine guarantee. Nobody mentions being police-vetted or MLA-certified prominently. Nobody has a dedicated automotive lockout landing page even though it's 30% of emergency searches.

When we find those gaps, we build ads that fill them. Your competitor leads with 'Professional Locksmith Services'? You lead with '15-Minute Guaranteed Response — Or It's Free'. They send traffic to a homepage? You send traffic to a page that matches exactly what the person searched for. They have no reviews showing? You set up review extensions on day one.

The best ads aren't written in isolation. They're written as a direct response to what's already showing up in the search results. You're not just competing for attention — you're competing for the click against three other ads on the same page.

We do this for every client before we write a single ad

This isn't an optional extra or a premium add-on. Competitive intelligence is step one of our process for every locksmith client. Before we write a headline, choose a keyword, or set a bid, we know exactly who you're up against and where they're vulnerable. We know their messaging, their extensions, their landing pages, and their estimated budget.

That's how we consistently build campaigns that outperform from week one — not through guesswork, but through preparation. And because we only work with one locksmith per territory, we never have to pull punches. Your competitor intelligence stays yours.

Want to know exactly what ads your competitors are running and where the gaps are? Book a call and we'll walk you through the competitive landscape in your area — no obligation, just clarity.
